Recently as part of a pitch to a new client we were asked whether or not they should rebrand. Although not part of their original brief it had been suggested by another design agency and they wanted our opinion.

In response, we asked the client whether they felt their core values as an organisation were out of touch with the business or the marketing strategies of the company. Their response was no and so we therefore advised them against rebranding at this stage.

An effective brand is not just an identity but something that defines the company and clearly states exactly what they do and who they do it for. At the heart of any brand should be a set of inherent values, a philosophy and proposition. By applying these core values and philosophy to everything a company does they should effectively differentiate themselves from their competitors and lay the foundations on which to build long-term, successful relationships today and in the future.

The reality is that when a company says they want to rebrand more often than not they are simply seeking a cosmetic change that is supported by nothing more than a subjective preference or that a company has such severe business issues which need to be addressed first and which a rebrand alone will not solve outright.

So when should a rebrand be considered. Experts and Liven agree there are two main reasons when a rebrand is justified. Firstly when a company’s inherent values are no longer valid or inline with the company’s aspirations and secondly, in light of a merger where the result is a potential expansion of the service offering.

Other reasons when a rebrand might be justified include when there has been significant market changes due to increased competition, when the brand is seeking to enter or attract new markets and when consumer trends or demands leading to the brand not performing, lacking identity or losing relevance.

Cromwell Medical got in touch with Liven as they were looking for a new healthcare brand identity to provide an effective communication platform from which to engage positively with both their clients, staff and candidates.

We have been working with Cromwell Medical on their new healthcare brand identity and over the coming months will assist with brand development, website design and build and the creation of necessary print material, including corporate stationery and brochures.

In light of this, we thought we would provide ten top design and marketing tips for recruitment companies looking for ways to improve their existing marketing activities.

• 1. Services: Clearly identify all the services you offer so that potential clients and candidates clearly understand exactly what you do. If you don’t you might get wrongly mistaken as just offering one type of recruitment service (e.g. contingency, headhunting etc.)
  2. Candidate Screening: Communicate your process for vetting potential candidates prior to sending them for interview.
  3. Brochure Design: If you’re considering designing a brochure, a good addition is an internal pocket, allowing contract forms to be stored.
  4. Positioning: When developing an effective brand position to bring to market, identify your unique strengths. Stressing that you are professional, honest and reliable, whilst important, does not differentiate your offering since these things would be expected by any potential client or candidate anyway.
  5. Regularly Uploading Content: Keep adding content regularly to your website – as well as encouraging visitors to keep returning, this also has significant SEO benefits and will help to increase traffic to your site.
  6. Analyse: Integrate Google Analytics or a similar package into your website so that you can evaluate website footfall and establish the impact of individual marketing activities.
  7. Social Media: Use social media such as LinkedIn and Facebook to raise your profile and promote key vacancies, new articles etc.
  8. Social Responsibility: Undertake social responsibility initiatives such as supporting a local charity – this can not only build a positive brand image, but also encourage staff bonding and strengthen morale, reducing staff turnover.
  9. Establish an Event: Finding a suitable skills niche and establishing a themed event can prove a cost effective promotional tool as well as a great way to reach new candidates and clients.
  10. Brand Guidelines: Establish printed brand guidelines to maintain a strong and consistent identity when creating all marketing collateral.
